For most employers, the MRO Assistant is the primary day-to-day contact for most details related to the specimen collection, laboratory, and MRO services. Only rarely do issues or questions arise that require providing the employer with additional assistance from a C-SAPA or from the MRO. Therefore, the MRO Assistant plays a principal role in the employer’s substance abuse program.
MRO Assistants with the extensive training and experience required to master the core competencies of this vital position can be certified by examination through the MROCC (Medical Review Officer Certification Council). A Certified MRO Assistant (MRO-A) has demonstrated attainment of the highest standards of expertise and skills needed to properly, professionally and consistently assist the MRO with integrity and confidentiality throughout the entire drug testing process.
Critical to that process is detailed knowledge not only about the process itself, but also about which specific functions and tasks the MRO Assistant can and can not assist the MRO with. While DOT regulations prohibit the MRO from delegating certain duties to the MRO Assistant, ultimate responsibility for the integrity of the testing program rests with the employer. Therefore, the wise employer chooses MRO/TPA services carefully. Drug Screens Plus Big Responsibility…Smart Choice!
Certification of MRO Assistants is not yet required by DOT, but it is certainly an indication of an MRO or TPA organization that demonstrates a high level of professionalism. An organization like Drug Screens Plus!
